There is no denying that the 1990 film ‘Edward Scissorhands‘ is a true classic and one that changed the career of Johnny Depp. However, behind the scenes, getting the gig wasn’t exactly easy for the young actor at the time. There was lots of competition for the role, which included A-listers such as Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks.

Even when he was on-set, Depp revealed he never really felt secure about his starring role in the film.

“He didn’t know exactly what I was going to do when I walked on the set, the same thing with Ed Wood. In fact, I spent the first two weeks of Ed Wood and Scissorhands and Sleepy Hallow thinking I was going to be fired, that I was going to be replaced. But luckily Tim was happy with the stuff, and I didn’t lose my job.”

Depp would also reveal another story that saw fans pay him a visit on the set, looking for Tom Hanks. Once again, he thought the role was going elsewhere during that moment.

“One afternoon while everyone was off rehearsing. There were two young girls at the door and I thought, Oh, they found me and maybe they want me to sign something, I don’t know. So, I opened the door and said, How do you do? And they said, Hi. Is Tom Hanks here? Does he live here? I said, What? No. Not yet. And I was convinced that Hanks would be replacing me. I was convinced. It was one of the most frightening moments in my career.”

Despite his doubts, Depp got the role. However, as we’ll reveal, Tom Cruise was also attached to the project. Ultimately, he lost out for a very curious reason.

Alongside Express, it was screenwriter Caroline Thompson that recalled the process of Tom Cruise potentially getting cast for the film.

As it turns out, even early on during his career, Cruise was very curious about his roles. However, according to Thompson, he might’ve asked one too many questions for this role in ‘Edward Scissorhands’.

According to the screenwriter, Cruise wanted to know everything about the character, including how he went to the bathroom.

“[Cruise] wanted to know how Edward went to the bathroom,” she told Express.

“He was asking the kind of questions about the character that can’t be asked for this character! Part of the delicacy of the story was not answering questions like: ‘How does he go to the bathroom? How did he live without eating all those years?'”

Ultimately, both sides mutually agreed to go their own ways. Cruise wanted answers to his questions, while Tim Burton didn’t exactly have ever single little detail in place. It is also believed that Burton mutually parted way with Cruise for the simple fact that Tom asked for a little too many details.

Nonetheless, it all worked out for every side involved, as ‘Edward Scissorhands‘ turned into an absolute classic. As for Tom Cruise, he appeared in a pretty significant role himself that same year.

What Role Did Tom Cruise Take On Instead?

Cruise opted for the role of Cole Trickle instead, starring in the 1990 film ‘Days of Thunder‘. It seemed to be Tom’s type of script, as the film also featured some danger, such as Tom himself driving the car, instead of opting for a stunt-double.

The film was a hit at the box office bringing in $157 million off a $60 million budget.

In addition, the film also boosted Cruise’s personal life at the time, as he met his wife, now ex-wife, Nicole Kidman. The two got married just six months after the film’s release and stayed together up until 2001.
